Why Would You Want to Memorize Scripture
God's Word is important to know so we can apply it to everyday life. The Psalmist tells us "I have hidden your Word in my heart." Psalms 119:11 (NLT) If you commit to memorizing Scripture, you can reach within yourself and draw out a verse that can help you in any of life's situations and challenges. Even in the depth of despair, uncertainty, helplessness, loneliness, or human challenges, God's Word can give you direction, hope, love, comfort, strength, and peace.
The following are some examples:
"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
"When I discovered Your Words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart's delight" Jeremiah 15: 16a (NLT)
"Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." Psalms 119: 105 (NLT)
How Can You Begin Memorizing Scripture
It helps to have someone you are accountable to for memorizing Scripture. His Word can give us guidance, comfort, and peace when we need to hear a Word from the Lord. If you join in a Small Group Bible Study, Christian Book Group, or other Christian Group, you can draw names for your Accountability Partner or any method that you would like. The amount of Scripture that you want to memorize is entirely up to you. Some like to memorize one or two verses each week or every other week. It is helpful to write/print your memory verse on an index card or something similar. When you memorize a new verse, it is good to repeat the last two or three verses you have memorized for review and, thus, help you reinforce your Scripture Memory.
Where Can I Find A Source For Scriptures To Memorize
In the beginning, it is not unusual to memorize a verse that is meaningful to you. The Navigators, (NavPress) has a long history of providing Scripture Memory packets. And also, Christian Book Distributors offers some Scripture Memory packets. These are easily available to order online.
A Special Verse that I memorized recently is:
"Because You are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings." Psalms 63:7 (NLT)
